The issue of climate change is not a new one; scientists have known about the effects of burning fossil fuels on the environment for many years. However, despite this awareness, little has been done to mitigate the effects and halt fossil fuel extraction. The voices of scientists are being drowned out by the power and greed of businesses and individuals making unbelievable amounts of money from the exploitation of fossil fuels. Worse still, governments subsidise these activities, (to the tune of $20bn/year in the USA and $55bn/year in the EU)[5], perpetuating the release of harmful emissions by these businesses. What will it take for politicians and businesses to wake up to the climate emergency and swap fossil fuel subsidies for investment in renewable energy?
